Small town wrapping

April 29, 2008

Thanks to the long weekend I was able to start and finish this new wrapping paper design. It was one of those things that once you start you just can’t stop. I drew pages and pages of small town animals, people and objects. I was going to make it more dense with pictures, but I think I got to the end of my tether on this one.

When wine gets old.

I smell a rat

April 22, 2008

Non wine experts such as myself, love hearing those stories about panels of expert wine tasters being fooled by a C-grade wine in a blind tasting. In South Africa that wine is called Chateau Libertas – and though it isn’t undrinkable and many hip and happening people swear by it, it’s vinegar compared to some of the A grades out there. This illustration is for an article about such a story which also touches on how open to influence the human brain is in wine tasting. If one person mentions an aroma, suddenly everyone smells it.

Men drivers

April 18, 2008

This I did for an article in Menshealth that I wrote. The article tackles the question of whether men are better drivers than women. Age old and a little controversial – always a winner. The illustration is of this paragraph:

“Guys on the other hand have been writing off horses, ox wagons, penny-farthings and cars ever since it was an option. And it goes without saying that when you’re smashing up cars, safety goes down the toilet, along with affordable insurance premiums.”

City

April 14, 2008

A long time ago, on this very blog I threatened to do a huge cityscape. Well, with all the power failures we’ve been having, there’s been plenty of time for me to sit on the couch, drink tea and draw. So I hauled a big old canvas out of the garage, found a permanent marker and started. This is what it looks like so far – I’ll probably try fill up the whole canvas and then I’ll add colour in Photoshop. I won;t have the patience to use real paint.

Healthy and Un

April 9, 2008

This is for an article in Menshealth about how eating unhealthy foods can lead to erectile dysfunction. I decided to think of an idea that wouldn’t be too pornographic to draw – and I think I succeeded.

Beverage drinkers wrapping

April 4, 2008

I’ve been asked to design wrapping paper for a card company using my tea drinker characters – it’s not easy, especially because I’m not a designer and also especially because I’m doing it in Photoshop and the file has grown to be about 250 megs. It’s making my iMac feel like a Commodore 64. Maybe I shouldn’t be using Photoshop, but as I said, I’m not a designer so how should I know. Anyhow, this is where I’m at right now. I like my font, don’t you?
